Exercise 24, § 4

Commutative Algebra, II, 146

(a) Let AA be a ring and M,NM, N two AA-modules such that MM is finitely generated. Show that Supp⁡(Hom⁡A(M,N))\operatorname{Supp}(\operatorname{Hom}_A(M, N)) is contained in the intersection Supp⁡(M)∩Supp⁡(N)\operatorname{Supp}(M) \cap \operatorname{Supp}(N).

(b) Give an example where MM and NN are both finitely presented and Supp⁡(Hom⁡A(M,N))\operatorname{Supp}(\operatorname{Hom}_A(M, N)) is strictly contained in Supp⁡(M)∩Supp⁡(N)\operatorname{Supp}(M) \cap \operatorname{Supp}(N) (take A=Z(p)A = \mathbf{Z}_{(p)} and N=AN = A).

(c) Let MM be the Z\mathbf{Z}-module the direct sum of the Z/pkZ\mathbf{Z}/p^k\mathbf{Z} (pp prime, k∈Nk \in \mathbf{N}). Show that Supp⁡(Hom⁡Z(M,M))\operatorname{Supp}(\operatorname{Hom}_{\mathbf{Z}}(M, M)) is not contained in Supp⁡(M)\operatorname{Supp}(M).
