Exercise 25, § 4

Commutative Algebra, II, 146

Let AA be a Noetherian ring, X=Spec⁡(A)X = \operatorname{Spec}(A) its spectrum, MM a finitely generated AA-module and Y=Supp⁡(M)Y = \operatorname{Supp}(M). Let YkY_k (1≤k≤n1 \leq k \leq n) be the distinct connected components of YY.

(a) Show that there exists a unique decomposition of MM as a direct sum M=M1⊕M2⊕…⊕MnM = M_1 \oplus M_2 \oplus \ldots \oplus M_n such that Supp⁡(Mk)=Yk\operatorname{Supp}(M_k) = Y_k for all kk.

(b) If a=Ann⁡(M)a = \operatorname{Ann}(M) and ak=Ann⁡(Mk)a_k = \operatorname{Ann}(M_k), show that the aka_k are relatively prime in pairs and that ∏k=1nak=a\prod_{k=1}^n a_k = a.

(Using Proposition 17 of no. 4, reduce it to the case where a=0a = 0 and Y=XY = X and apply Proposition 15 of no. 3.)
