Let A be a ring and E(A) the set of classes of finitely generated projective A-modules; let G be the Z-module of formal linear combinations of elements of E(A) and N the submodule of G consisting of the elements ξ−ξ′−ξ′′, where ξ,ξ′,ξ′′ are the classes of three projective A-modules M, M', M'' such that there exists an exact sequence
0→M′→M→M′′→0
(it amounts to the same to say that M is isomorphic to the direct sum M′⊕M′′ by virtue of Algebra, Chapter II, § 2, no. 2). Let K(A) be the quotient Z-module G/N and, for every finitely generated projective A-module, let κ(M) (or κA(M)) be its class in K(A).
(a) Show that there exists on K(A) a unique commutative ring structure whose addition is that the Z-module K(A) and multiplication is such that κ(M)κ(N)=κ(M⊗AN) for two finitely generated projective A-modules M, N; κ(A) is the unit element of K(A).
(b) For every finitely generated projective A-module M and every integer p⩾0 let λp denote the element κ(⋀pM) of K(A). Show that
λp(M⊕N)=r+s=p∑λr(M)⋅λs(N). Let
λT(M) denote the element
∑p=0∞λp(M)Tp in the ring
K(A)[[T]] of formal power series in one indeterminate over the ring
K(A); show that
λT(M⊕N)=λT(M)λT(N); derive a homomorphism also written
x↦λT(x) of
K(A) to the multiplicative group of formal power series of
K(A)[[T]] whose constant term is equal to 1. Let
λp(x) denote the coefficient of
Tp in
λT(x); then
λp(x+y)=r+s=p∑λr(x)λs(y) for all
x,y in
K(A).
(c) If A is a local ring, the ring K(A) is canonically identified with Z and λp(n)=(pn). Deduce that, if A is the direct composition of m local rings, K(A) is isomorphic to Zm.
(d) Let ϕ:A→B be a ring homomorphism. Show that there exists a unique ring homomorphism ϕ′:K(A)→K(B) such that ϕ′(κA(M))=κB(M(B)) for every finitely generated projective A-module M; then ϕ′(λp(x))=λp(ϕ′(x)) for all x∈K(A); if ψ:B→C is another ring homomorphism, (ψ∘ϕ)′=ψ′∘ϕ′.
(e) Let ϕ:A→B be a ring homomorphism for which B is a finitely generated projective A-module; for every finitely generated projective B-module N, ϕ∗(N) is then a finitely generated projective A-module; deduce that there exists a Z-module homomorphism ϕ1:K(B)→K(A) such that
ϕ1(κB(N))=κA(ϕ∗(N)). Show that, for all
x∈K(A) and
y∈K(B),
ϕ1(y⋅ϕ′(x))=ϕ1(y)⋅x. If
ψ:B→C is another ring homomorphism such that
C is a finitely generated projective
B-module, then
(ψ∘ϕ)1=ϕ1∘ψ1.
