Exercise 24, § 5

Commutative Algebra, II, 153

Let AA be a ring such that Spec(A)\mathrm{Spec}(A) is connected.

(a) If MM is a projective AA-module of rank nn, every direct factor NN of MM not reduced to 0 admits a rank ≤n\leq n.

(b) Let uu be a homomorphism of a projective AA-module of finite rank MM to a projective AA-module of finite rank M′M' such that u(M)u(M) is a direct factor of M′M'. Show that Ker(u)\mathrm{Ker}(u) is then a direct factor of MM (cf. Exercise 23) and

rg(Ker(u))+rg(Im(u))=rg(M). \mathrm{rg}(\mathrm{Ker}(u)) + \mathrm{rg}(\mathrm{Im}(u)) = \mathrm{rg}(M).

Moreover the transpose tu{}^t u is such that tu(M′∗){}^t u({M'}^*) is a direct factor of M∗M^* and rg(tu(M′∗))=rg(u(M))\mathrm{rg}({}^t u({M'}^*)) = \mathrm{rg}(u(M)) (cf. § 3, Exercise I4 (a)).
