Commutative Algebra, III, 232

Let AA be a graded commutative ring of type Z\mathbf{Z} and (An)(A_n) its graduation; we set A≥=⨁n≥0An,A≤=⨁n≥0AnA^{\geq} = \bigoplus_{n \geq 0} A_n, \quad A^{\leq} = \bigoplus_{n \geq 0} A_n; these are graded subrings of AA.

(a) For every homogeneous element ff of AA of degree dd, the ring of fractions AfA_f (corresponding to the multiplicative subset consisting of the fnf^n, where n≥0n \geq 0) has a canonical graded ring structure (Algebra, Chapter 11, § 11); we denote by A(f)A_{(f)} the subring of AA, consisting of elements of degree 0. Show that, if d>0d > 0, then (Af′′)=A(f)(A''_f) = A_{(f)}, A(f)A_{(f)} is isomorphic to A(d)/(f−1)A(d)A^{(d)}/(f - 1)A^{(d)} and ((Af)≥)/f/1((A_f)^{\geq})_{/f/1} is a graded ring isomorphic to A(f)A_{(f)}.

(b) Let the polynomial ring B=A[X]=A⊗ZZ[X]B = A[X] = A \otimes_{\mathbf{Z}} \mathbf{Z}[X] be given the graduation the tensor product of those on AA and Z[X]\mathbf{Z}[X], a graduation compatible with the ring structure on BB. Show that, if d>0d > 0, B(f)B_{(f)} is isomorphic to (An)≤(A_n)^{\leq} and (A(d))f(A^{(d)})_f is a graded ring isomorphic to A(f)⊗ZZ[X,X−1]A_{(f)} \otimes_{\mathbf{Z}} \mathbf{Z}[X, X^{-1}].

(c) Let gg be another homogeneous element of AA of degree ee. Show that, if d>0d > 0 and e>0e > 0, A(f,g)A_{(f,g)} is isomorphic to (A(f))gd/fe(A_{(f)})_{g^d/f^e}.

(d) Suppose d>0d > 0 and An={0}A_n = \{0\} for n<0n < 0. Show that, if AA is Noetherian, so is A(f)A_{(f)} (use § 2, no. 10, Corollary 4 to Theorem 2). \*
