(a) Let KK be a commutative field of characteristic p>0p > 0 and BB the ring of formal power series with coefficients in KK in two infinite systems of indeterminates (Xn),(Yn)(X_n), (Y_n) with only a finite number of terms of given degree (§2§ 2, Exercise 12); BB is a Hausdorff local ring with the nn-adic topology, mm being its maximal ideal. Let bb be the closed ideal of BB generated by the monomials YiXjY_i X_j for i≥0,0≤j≤ii \geq 0, 0 \leq j \leq i; let AA be the local ring B/bB/b, which is Hausdorff with the nn-adic topology, where n=m/bn = m/b is its maximal ideal. Let cc be the element of AA equal to the class mod. bb of ∑n=1∞Xnpn\sum_{n=1}^\infty X_n^{p^n}; show that, for k≥3k \geq 3, nkn(Ac)⊄n2cn^k n (Ac) \not\subset n^2 c (and a fortiori the relation

n2(n2kn(Ac))=n2k+2n(Ac) n^2(n^{2k} n (Ac)) = n^{2k+2} n (Ac)
cannot hold).

(b) Let C′C' be the commutative ring with underlying set A×AA \times A, with multiplication (a,x)(a′,x′)=(aa′,ax′+a′x)(a, x)(a', x') = (aa', ax' + a'x); let CC be the subring A×(Ac)A \times (Ac) of C′C'; CC and C′C' are local rings, whose maximal ideals we denote by rr and r′r', and C′C' is a finitely generated CC-module. Show that r=r′nCr = r' n C but that the topology induced on CC by the r′r'-adic topology is not the rr-adic topology.
