Exercise 13, § 3

Commutative Algebra, III, 248

Let AA be a Noetherian local ring with maximal ideal mm and BB a ring such that A⊂B⊂A^A \subset B \subset \hat{A}. Suppose that BB is a Noetherian local ring with maximal ideal nn (Exercise 14).

(a) Show that n=B∩mn = B \cap m and B=A+nB = A + n. If further n2=B∩m2n^2 = B \cap m^2, then n=Bmn = Bm (note that then n=Bm+n2n = Bm + n^2).

(b) Let KK be a commutative field, CC the polynomial ring K[X]K[X], pp the prime ideal CXCX, AA the (Noetherian) local ring CpC_p and mm its maximal ideal; the completion A^\hat{A} is identified with the ring of formal power series K[[X]]K[[X]] (no. 4, Proposition 8). Let u=u(X)u = u(X) be an element of A^\hat{A} which is transcendental over the field of rational fractions K(X)K(X) (cf. Algebra, Chapter V, §5, Exercise 13 or Functions of a Real Variable, Chapter III, § 1, Exercise 14 (a)) with no constant term; let BB be the subring of A^\hat{A} consisting of the quotients

P(X,u(X))/Q(X,u(X)), P(X, u(X))/Q(X, u(X)),

where PP and QQ are polynomials in K[X,Y]K[X, Y] such that Q(0,0)≠0Q(0, 0) \neq 0. Show that BB is a Noetherian local ring containing AA, whose maximal ideal nn is generated by XX and u(X)u(X); but on BB the nn-adic topology is strictly coarser than the mm-adic topology.

(c) With the same definitions as in (b), let B′B' be the subring of BB generated by AA and u(X)u(X); show that B′B' is not a local ring (note that B′∩nB' \cap n is a maximal ideal of B′B' but that there are elements of B′B' not invertible in B′B' and not belonging to B′∩nB' \cap n).
