Commutative Algebra, III, 248
Let be a commutative field, the ring , the maximal ideal of , the local ring , its maximal ideal and the completion of , which is identified with the ring of formal power series (no. 4, Proposition 8). Let be the subring of consisting of the formal power series of the type , where and and are two polynomials of such that .
(a) Show that , that is a local ring whose maximal ideal is equal to and that for every integer ; is therefore everywhere dense in and the topology induced on by the -adic topology on is the -adic topology.
(b) Show that in the ideal generated by all the elements of the form , where , is not finitely generated (cf. Algebra, Chapter V, § 5, Exercise 13) and therefore is not Noetherian, although and are Noetherian and the ideal is finitely generated; and is the closure in of the principal ideal (not closed) ; finally is not a flat -module and is not a flat -module (use Chapter I, § 3, no. 5, Proposition 9).
(c) Let be an invertible formal power series in , which is not an element of . If is the ideal of generated by and , show that on the -adic topology is strictly finer than the topology induced on by the -adic topology on . Show that the canonical mapping (where is the completion of with respect to the -adic topology) is not injective (consider the images of and ; to show that these two elements are distinct in , consider this tensor product as a quotient of the tensor product ).
(d) Let be two invertible formal power series in such that and are linearly independent over . Let be the principal ideals of generated respectively by and ; the -adic topologies on and are respectively identical with the topologies induced by that on and the closures of these ideals in are both identical with the principal ideal of . Deduce that the closure of in is not equal to and that the closure of is not equal to .
