(a) Let AA be a Noetherian integral domain, mm an ideal of AA and A^\hat{A} the Hausdorff completion of AA with respect to the mm-adic topology. Show that, if MM is a torsion-free AA-module, then, for every element bb which is not a divisor of 00 in A^\hat{A}, the homothety with ratio bb in the AA-module A^⊗AM\hat{A} \otimes_A M is injective. (Reduce it to the case where MM is finitely generated; then there exists a maximal free system (mj)1<j<∞(m_j)_{1 < j < \infty} in MM and a∈Aa \in A such that for all m∈M,am=∑jajmjm \in M, am = \sum_j a_j m_j where aj∈Aa_j \in A; every x∈A^⊗AMx \in \hat{A} \otimes_A M therefore satisfies ax=∑jbj⊗mjax = \sum_j b_j \otimes m_j where bj∈A^b_j \in \hat{A}; then use the flatness of the AA-module A^\hat{A}.)

(b) Let KK be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 00, BB the polynomial ring K[X,Y]K[X, Y] and P(X,Y)=X(X2+Y2)+(X2−Y2)P(X, Y) = X(X^2 + Y^2) + (X^2 - Y^2). Show that the ideal BPBP is prime in BB; consider the quotient ring A=B/BPA = B/BP which is a Noetherian integral domain. Let mm be the maximal ideal of AA, the canonical image of the maximal ideal n=BX+BYn = BX + BY of BB. Show that the Hausdorff completion A^\hat{A} of AA with respect to the mm-adic topology is not an integral domain (observe that in the ring of formal power series K[[X,Y]]K[[X, Y]], PP decomposes into a product of two formal power series ("double point of an irreducible cubic").
