Bourbaki

Exercise 18, § 3

Commutative Algebra, III, 250

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let AA be a local ring with maximal ideal mm; an AA-module MM is called quasi-finite if M/mMM/mM is a vector space of finite rank over the residue field k=A/mk = A/m. In particular, if AA is an integral domain, the field of fractions KK of AA is a quasi-finite AA-module.

(a) Show that if AA is Noetherian and MM is a quasi-finite AA-module, its Hausdorff completion M^\hat{M} with respect to the mm-adic topology is a finitely generated AA-module (use §2, no. 11, Corollary 2 to Proposition 14). In particular, if AA is complete and MM Hausdorff with the mm-adic topology, MM is a finitely generated AA-module.

(b) Let BB be another local ring, nn its maximal ideal, ϕ:A→B\phi : A \to B a local homomorphism and MM a finitely generated BB-module. Show that, if BB is Noetherian and MM is a quasi-finite AA-module, then the mm-adic and nn-adic topologies on MM are identical. (Note that M/mMM/mM is a BB-module of finite length and deduce that, if bb is the annihilator of the BB-module M/mMM/mM, then V(b)={n}V(b) = \{n\} in Spec⁡(B)\operatorname{Spec}(B) and therefore V(mB+b)={n}V(mB + b) = \{n\}. Conclude using Chapter II, §4, no. 3, Corollary 2 to Proposition 11.)

(c) Under the hypotheses of (b), show that, if M≠0M \neq 0, B/bB/b is a quasi-finite AA-module (note that M≠nMM \neq nM and M/nMM/nM is a vector space of finite rank over kk; deduce that B/nB/n is of finite rank over kk).
