Exercise 19, § 3

Commutative Algebra, III, 251

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let AA be a commutative Noetherian ring, mm an ideal of AA and SS a multiplicative subset of AA. Let AA be a given the mm-adic topology.

(a) Show that the ring A{S−1}A\{S^{-1}\} (§\S 2, Exercise 27) is a flat AA-module.

(b) Let S′S' be another multiplicative subset of AA contained in SS. Show that A{S−1}A\{S^{-1}\} is a flat (A{S′−1})(A\{{S'}^{-1}\})-module (use Exercise 27 (d) of §\S 2).

(c) Show that A{S−1}A\{S^{-1}\} is a flat A(S)A_{(S)}-module (§\S 2, Exercise 27 (g)).

(d) Suppose that S=A−pS = A - p, where pp is an open prime ideal of AA. Show that A{S−1}A\{S^{-1}\} is a faithfully flat A(S)A_{(S)}-module and deduce that the ring A,,A_{,,} is Noetherian (cf. §\S 2, Exercise 27 (g)).
