Exercise 23, § 3

Commutative Algebra, III, 252

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

(a) Let AA be a commutative Noetherian ring and mm an ideal of AA. Let P{M}P\{M\} denote the following property: MM is an AA-module and every finitely generated submodule of MM is annihilated by a power of mm.

Show that conditions (α), (β) and (γ) of Exercise 22 are fulfilled. (To prove (γ), reduce it to the case where MM is finitely generated; for all a∈ma \in m, there exists by hypothesis k>0k > 0 such that akN=0a^k N = 0; use the fact that there exists r>0r > 0 such that Ker⁡(aMr)∩Im⁡(aMr)=0\operatorname{Ker}(a_M^r) \cap \operatorname{Im}(a_M^r) = 0 (Algebra, Chapter VIII, § 2, no. 2, Lemma 2).)

(b) Show that, if MM is a finitely generated AA-module, the topology TP(M)\mathscr{T}_P(M) is identical with the mm-adic topology. Give an example of an AA-module MM for which TP(M)\mathscr{T}_P(M) is strictly finer that the mm-adic topology (cf. Exercise 11).

(c) Show that the conclusion of (a) does not extend to the case where AA is a non-commutative left Noetherian ring and mm is a two-sided ideal of AA (consider the ring of lower triangular matrices of order 2 over a commutative field).
