Exercise 4, § 3

Commutative Algebra, III, 246

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let AA be a semi-local ring and rr its Jacobson radical. For AA to be Noetherian, it is necessary and sufficient that every ideal of AA be closed under the rr-adic topology and that every maximal ideal of AA be finitely generated. (If these conditions hold, show first that the Hausdorff completion A^\hat{A} of AA is Noetherian, using § 2, no. 13, Corollary to Proposition 19 and no. 10, Corollary 5 to Theorem 1. Then observe that the rr-adic topology is Hausdorff on AA and that there exists an increasing injection of the set of ideals of AA into the set of ideals of A^\hat{A}.)
