Commutative Algebra, III, 246

Let AA be a commutative Noetherian ring and EE an AA-module. Let AA be given the topology Tm(A)\mathscr{T}_m(A) (§ 2, Exercise 24) and let Tm(E)\mathscr{T}_m(E) denote the linear topology on EE for which a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 0 consists of the submodules a.Ea.E, where aa runs through a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 0 for Tm(A)\mathscr{T}_m(A), consisting of ideals of AA. Show that if EE is finitely generated, EE is a Hausdorff topological AA-module (with Tm(A)\mathscr{T}_m(A) and Tm(E)\mathscr{T}_m(E)) where every submodule is closed. A fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 0 for Tm(E)\mathscr{T}_m(E) then consists of the submodules FF of EE such that E/FE/F is a module of finite length and, for every submodule M of E, the topology Tm(M)\mathscr{T}_m(M) is induced by Tm(E)\mathscr{T}_m(E).
