Exercise 2, § 1

Commutative Algebra, IV, 286

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let KK be a commutative field and AA the valuation ring, whose order group is Q\mathbf{Q}, consisting of the "formal power series" ∑rcrTr\sum_r c_r T^r, where cr∈Kc_r \in K, r∈Q+r \in \mathbf{Q}_+ and the set of rr such that cr≠0c_r \neq 0 is well ordered. Let aa be an irrational number >0> 0, aa the ideal of AA consisting of the elements with valuation >a> a and CC the ring A/aA/a. Then Spec⁡(C)\operatorname{Spec}(C) reduces to a point pp; for all x≠0x \neq 0 in CC, px≠0px \neq 0, but for all λ∈p\lambda \in p, there exists y≠0y \neq 0 in CC such that λy=0\lambda y = 0. In particular, Ass⁡(C)=∅\operatorname{Ass}(C) = \varnothing, although Supp⁡(C)=Spec⁡(C)={p}\operatorname{Supp}(C) = \operatorname{Spec}(C) = \{p\}.
