(a) Let AA be a local integrally closed domain, mm its maximal ideal, KK its field of fractions, K′K' a finite Galois extension of KK, A′A' the integral closure of AA in K′K', m′m' a maximal ideal of A′A' lying above mm, B=Az(m′)B = A^z(m') its decomposition ring and n=m′∩Bn = m' \cap B. For every integer k>0k > 0, B=A+nkB = A + n^k (argue as in Proposition 4). Moreover there exists a primitive element zz of KzK^z (field of fractions of BB) such that z∈nz \in n; deduce that n∩A[z]=mA[z]n \cap A[z] = mA[z].

(b) Show that, for every integer kk, mkBn∩A=mkm^kB_n \cap A = m^k. (If x∈mkBn∩Ax \in m^kB_n \cap A, note that there exists t∈A[z]t \in A[z] (where zz is defined in (a)) such that t∉nt \notin n and tx∈mkA[z]tx \in m^kA[z]; writing t=t0+t1z+⋯+tr−1zr−1t = t_0 + t_1z + \cdots + t_{r-1}z^{r-1} (where rr is the degree [Kz:K][K^z : K]), deduce that t0x∈mkt_0x \in m^k and t0∉mt_0 \notin m.)

(c) Suppose now that KK is any Galois extension of KK. Keeping the same notation as above, show that B=A+nkB = A + n^k and mkBn∩A=mkm^kB_n \cap A = m^k still (note that every element of Az(m′)A^z(m') is contained in the decomposition ring of m′∩Cm' \cap C, where CC is the integral closure of AA in a finite Galois sub-extension of K′K').

(d) Under the hypotheses of (c), show that, if AA is Noetherian, so is BB. (Observe that the Hausdorff completion of BnB_n with respect to the mm-adic topology is identified with the completion A^\hat{A} of AA by (c); if ϕ:Bn→A^\phi : B_n \to \hat{A} is the canonical homomorphism, show that, for every ideal aa of BnB_n, ϕ(aA^)=a\phi(a\hat{A}) = a, using the fact that in A^\hat{A} every ideal is finitely generated and hence that aA^a\hat{A} is generated by a finite number of elements of aa and thus reduce it to the case where K′K' is a finite extension of KK.)
