Let KK be a field, K′K' a finite Galois extension of KK, CC the polynomial ring K′[X,Y]K'[X, Y], BB the quotient ring C/CXYC/CXY and x,yx, y the canonical images of X,YX, Y in BB. Let A′A' be the subring K[x]+yK′[y]K[x] + yK'[y] of BB. The Galois group GG of K′K' over KK operates faithfully on A′A', the ring of invariants AA of GG in A′A' being K[x,y]K[x, y]. Let SS be the set of powers of xx in A′A'. Show that S−1A′=S−1AS^{-1}A' = S^{-1}A and that GG does not operate faithfully on S−1A′S^{-1}A'.
