Exercise 18, § 2
Commutative Algebra, V, 367
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be a local integrally closed domain, its field of fractions, its maximal ideal and its residue field. Let be a finite algebraic extension of of degree , a subring of containing , integral over and with as field of fractions and () the maximal ideals of . An ideal is called unramified in if there exists a basis of over consisting of elements of and whose discriminant (Algebra, Chapter IX, § 2) belongs to .
(a) Show that, if is unramified in , is a separable extension of , is the integral closure of in and is a free -module every basis of which over is a basis of over ; is the Jacobson radical of and is a semi-simple -algebra of rank over which is separable over and the direct composition of the fields .
(b) Let be the separable factor of the degree of over . Show that, if is infinite, (use Exercise 17 (c)); moreover, the following conditions are equivalent: (α) is unramified in . (β) is a finitely generated -module and is a semi-simple -algebra and separable over . (γ) . (To see that (β) implies (γ), note that there is a system of generators of the -module whose classes mod. form a basis of over , using Chapter II, § 3, no. 2, Corollary 2 to Proposition 4; deduce that
(c) Extend the results of (b) to the case where is finite (in the notation of Exercise 16, show that, if is unramified in , then is unramified in ; taking account of the fact that is infinite, use Exercise 16 (c), thus obtaining an element such that
