Commutative Algebra, V, 368
Let be an integrally closed domain, its field of fractions, a finite algebraic extension of of degree and a subring of containing , integral over and with as field of fractions; if is a prime ideal of , let denote the ring of fractions of whose denominators are in . is called unramified in if is unramified in .
(a) Let () be the prime ideals of lying above . Let be the separable factor of the degree of the field of fractions of over the field of fractions of ; show that . (Reduce it to Exercise 18.)
(b) The following conditions are equivalent: (α) The ideal is unramified in . (β) contains a basis of over whose discriminant belongs to . (γ) . In particular, if , is unramified in . Give an example where is unramified in but is not a finitely generated -module (cf. Exercise 9 (a)).
(c) is called unramified in (or in ) if every prime ideal of is unramified in . Show that is then a faithfully flat -module (cf. Chapter II, § 3, no. 4, Corollary to Proposition 15). Let be a finite algebraic extension of of degree ; let be the integral closure of in and the integral closure of in ; for to be unramified in , it is necessary and sufficient that be unramified in and be unramified in .
(d) Let be a field, an integrally closed integral -algebra and its field of fractions. Let be a finite separable algebraic extension of of degree over . Show that, if is a field, is unramified in (consider a primitive element of over and the basis of consisting of the for ).
