Exercise 20, § 2

Commutative Algebra, V, 369

Let AA be the integral domain defined in Chapter III, § 3, Exercise 15 (b), CC the local ring Am\mathbf{A}_m, n=mAmn = mA_m the maximal ideal of CC and LL the field of fractions of AA and CC. If x,yx, y are the canonical images of XX and YY in CC, show that t=y/xt = y/x does not belong to CC but that t2∈Ct^2 \in C, so that CC is not integrally closed; moreover C′=C[t]C' = C[t] is the integral closure of CC and is isomorphic to S−1K[T]S^{-1}K[T] (T an indeterminate), where SS is the multiplicative subset of K[T]K[T] consisting of the polynomials which are not divisible by T−1T - 1 nor by T+1T + 1. Show that C′C' is a finitely generated CC-module and that the (maximal) ideals of C′C' lying above nn are the principal ideals q1=(t−1)C′q_1 = (t - 1)C' and q2=(t+1)C′q_2 = (t + 1)C'; but the local rings Cq1′C'_{q_1} and Cq2′C'_{q_2} are not CC-algebras integral over CC.
