Exercise 2, § 3

Commutative Algebra, V, 370

Let KK be a field and BB the quotient of the polynomial ring K[X,Y]K[X, Y] in two indeterminates by the ideal aa of K[X,Y]K[X, Y] generated by X2X^2 and XYXY; denote by xx and yy the images in BB of the elements X,YX, Y; let AA be the subring K[x]K[x] of BB. Show that the elements xx and yny^n (n≥0n \geq 0) form a basis of BB over KK and that BB is not integral over AA. On the other hand, there exists in BB no element which is algebraically free over AA. Deduce a counter-example to Corollary 1 to Theorem 1 of no. 1 when AA is not an integral domain.
