Exercise 7, § 3

Commutative Algebra, V, 372

Let AA be an integrally Noetherian domain (Exercise 6), (ti)1≤i≤n(t_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n} a finite sequence of elements of an extension field of the field of fractions of AA, BB the ring A[t1,…,tn]A[t_1, \ldots, t_n], nn a maximal ideal of BB, p=A∩np = A \cap n, A′A' the integral closure of AA in BB and p′=n∩A′p' = n \cap A'. Then, if the local rings Ap′A'_p and Bn′B_{n'} are distinct, there exists a prime ideal of BB contained in nn, distinct from nn and containing pp ("Zariski's Principal Theorem"). (Using Exercise 6 (b), reduce it to the case where A′=AA' = A, then reduce it to the case where AA is a local ring with maximal ideal pp. Show that B/nB/n is then a finite algebraic extension of A/pA/p (cf. no. 4, Theorem 3); deduce that, for every ring CC such that A⊂C⊂BA \subset C \subset B, n∩Cn \cap C is a maximal ideal of CC. Then argue by induction on nn, denoting by BiB_i the integral closure of A[t1,…,ti]A[t_1, \ldots, t_i] in BB; distinguish two cases according to whether ti+1t_{i+1} is transcendental or algebraic over the field of fractions of BiB_i; in the former case, use Exercise 4 and, in the latter, Exercise 5 (c).)
