Exercise 8, § 3

Commutative Algebra, V, 372

Let AA be a ring. For AA to be a Jacobson ring, it is necessary and sufficient that, for every maximal ideal m′m' of the polynomial ring A[X]A[X], m′∩Am' \cap A is a maximal ideal of AA. (Note that if an integral domain BB admits a Jacobson radical R≠0\mathfrak{R} \neq 0 and if b∈Rb \in \mathfrak{R}, b≠0b \neq 0, the intersection of BB and a maximal ideal of B[X]B[X] containing 1+bX1 + bX cannot contain bb.)
