Exercise 1, § 1

Commutative Algebra, VI, 441

Let KK be a field; for every subring AA of KK let L(A)L(A) denote the set of local rings AA, of AA where pp runs through the prime ideals of AA (these local rings being identified with subrings of KK).

(a) For a local subring MM of KK to dominate a ring A,∈L(A)A, \in L(A), it is necessary and sufficient that A⊂MA \subset M; the local ring AA, dominated by MM is then unique and corresponds to the prime ideal p=m(M)∩Ap = m(M) \cap A.

(b) Let M,NM, N be two local subrings of KK and PP the subring of KK generated by M∪NM \cup N. Show that the following conditions are equivalent:

(a)(a) There exists a prime ideal pp of PP such that m(M)=p∩M,m(N)=p∩Nm(M) = p \cap M, m(N) = p \cap N.

(β)(\beta) The ideal aa generated in PP by m(M)∪m(N)m(M) \cup m(N) is distinct from PP.

(γ)(\gamma) There exists a local subring QQ of KK dominating both MM and NN.

If these conditions are satisfied, MM and NN are called related.

(c) Let A,BA, B be two subrings of KK and CC the subring of KK generated by A∪BA \cup B. Show that the following conditions are equivalent:

(a)(a) For every local ring Q⊂KQ \subset K containing AA and BB, A1=B1A_1 = B_1, where p=m(Q)∩A,q=m(Q)∩Bp = m(Q) \cap A, q = m(Q) \cap B.

(β)(\beta) For every prime ideal rr of CC, Ar=BrA_r = B_r, where p=r∩A,q=r∩Bp = r \cap A, q = r \cap B.

(γ)(\gamma) If M∈L(A)M \in L(A) and N∈L(B)N \in L(B) are related, they are identical.

(δ)(\delta) L(A)∩L(B)=L(C)L(A) \cap L(B) = L(C).

(Use (a) and (b)).
