Let be a ring in which the set of principal ideals is totally ordered by inclusion.
(a) Show that is a local ring, in which the nilradical is a prime ideal. Show that, either , or is nilpotent; the ring is a valuation ring.
(b) If is the totally ordered set of principal ideals of , show that the set of ideals of is totally ordered by inclusion and is isomorphic to the completion of the set (Set Theory, Chapter III, § 1, Exercise 15).
(c) Suppose that ; then may be considered as a module over the valuation ring ; let be the field of fractions of and the order group of a valuation on corresponding to ; show that there exists in two major sets such that is a -module isomorphic to (notation of § 3, no. 4).
(d) Conversely, given a valuation ring with field of fractions and order group and two major sets in , let and define on the product additive group a multiplication by setting
show that in the set of principal ideals is totally ordered by inclusion; the set of ordered pairs where is the nilradical of , and is isomorphic to .
(e) For every prime number , the ring is such that the set of principal ideals of is totally ordered by inclusion and the nilradical of is such that ; but show that the ring is not isomorphic to the ring constructed (starting with and ) by the method in (d) (note that contains no subring isomorphic to ).
(f) Show that for every prime number , the algebra of the group (Algebra, Chapter VII, § 2, Exercise 3) with respect to the prime field is a ring in which the principal ideals form a set which is totally ordered by inclusion and the nilradical satisfies , but is not isomorphic to the quotient of a valuation ring by an ideal.
