(a) Let Θ\Theta be a totally ordered set and for each s∈Θs \in \Theta let AsA_s be a subgroup of R\mathbf{R} not reduced to 0. Let

Γ(Θ,(As)s∈Θ)=G \Gamma(\Theta, (A_s)_{s \in \Theta}) = G
be the subgroup of the product ∏s∈ΘAs\prod_{s \in \Theta} A_s, consisting of the functions ff whose support is a well-ordered subset of @@. We define on GG an ordering compatible with its group structure taking the set G+G_+ of elements ⩾0\geqslant 0 to be the set consisting of the function 0 and the functions f≠0f \neq 0 such that f(θ)>0f(\theta) > 0 for the least element θ\theta of the support off. Show that GG is a totally ordered group and that Θ\Theta is canonically isomorphic to the set of principal isolated subgroups of GG ordered by the relation ⊃\supset; moreover, if H(a)H(a) corresponds to s∈Θs \in \Theta under this isomorphism, H(a)/H−(a)H(a)/H^-(a) is isomorphic to AsA_s.

(b) Consider the subgroup G′G' of the totally ordered group Q×Q\mathbf{Q} \times \mathbf{Q} (with the lexicographical ordering) generated by the elements (pn−1,npn−1)(p_n^{-1}, n p_n^{-1}), where (pn)(p_n) is the strictly increasing sequence of prime numbers. Show that the only isolated subgroup H′H' of G′G' distinct from 0 and G′G' is the group {0}×Z\{0\} \times \mathbf{Z}; but G′G' is not isomorphic to a subgroup of the product H′×(G′/H′)H' \times (G'/H') ordered by the lexicographical ordering.
