Exercise 5, § 4

Commutative Algebra, VI, 450

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let KK be a field and M\mathfrak{M} the set of subrings of KK which are not fields. Show that a maximal element of M\mathfrak{M} is a valuation ring of height 1 of its field of fractions LL and that KK is an algebraic extension of LL. The following conditions are equivalent: (a) M\mathfrak{M} is not empty. (b) M\mathfrak{M} admits a maximal element. (c) There exists a valuation of height 1 on KK (d) KK is not an algebraic extension of a finite prime field (cf. § 8, no. 1).
