Exercise 8, § 4

Commutative Algebra, VI, 452

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let AA be a local integral domain of dimension 1 (Exercise 7) and KK its field of fractions. Show that for AA to be the intersection of valuation rings (of KK) of height 1, it is necessary and sufficient that AA be completely integrally closed. Prove successively that: (a) A subring of KK containing AA and the inverse of an element ≠0\neq 0 of the maximal ideal mm of AA is equal to KK (use the fact that every ideal of AA distinct from 0 and AA is mm-primary). (b) If B⊇AB \supseteq A is a subring of KK distinct from KK, there exists a valuation ring VV of height 1 such that B⊂VB \subset V (use (a)). (c) Let z∈K−Az \in K - A; show that zm⊂mzm \subset m is impossible arguing as in Exercise 7 (b). Deduce that there exists a valuation ring VV of height 1 such that A⊂VA \subset V and z∉Vz \notin V. (If zm⊂Azm \subset A, use (a); otherwise, there is an x∈mx \in m such that

xy=z∈K−A; xy = z \in K - A;
observe that z∉A[z−1]z \notin A[z^{-1}] and use (b) to show the existence of VV.)
