Exercise 7, § 5

Commutative Algebra, VI, 456

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let K be a field and v a discrete valuation on K such that K is complete with Tv\mathscr{T}_v: let A\mathbf{A} and p\mathfrak{p} denote the ring and ideal of vv and U=A−pU = \mathbf{A} - \mathfrak{p} the set of invertible elements of A\mathbf{A}. Let uu be an isomorphism of KK onto a subfield of KK.

(a) Show that u(p)⊂Au(\mathfrak{p}) \subset \mathbf{A} and u(U)⊂Uu(U) \subset U. (To prove the first point, observe that for all z∈pz \in \mathfrak{p} the equation xn=1+zx^n = 1 + z admits a solution in A\mathbf{A} for all n>0n > 0 prime to the characteristic of the residue field of vv, using Hensel's Lemma; if v(u(z))<0v(u(z)) < 0, deduce that the integer v(u(z))v(u(z)) would be divisible by every integer n>0n > 0 prime to the characteristic of the residue field of vv. Then deduce the second assertion from the first.)

(b) Deduce from (a) that, either u(K∗)⊂Uu(K^*) \subset U, or uu is continuous (consider the image under uu of a uniformizer of vv).

(c) Give an example of an algebraically closed field Ω\Omega such that, taking K=Ω((X))K = \Omega((X)), KK is isomorphic to a subfield of KK contained in U∪{0}U \cup \{0\} (cf. Algebra, Chapter V, § 5, Exercise 13).
