Exercise 8, § 5

Commutative Algebra, VI, 457

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

(a) Let KK be a field, vv a valuation on KK of height 1 and AA its ring. Let HH be a compact subset of KK (with the topology Tv\mathscr{T}_v) and a≠0a \neq 0 a point of KK. Show that there exists a polynomial f∈K[X]f \in K[X] without constant term and such that f(a)=1,f(H)⊂Af(a) = 1, f(H) \subset A. (Prove that ff may be taken to be a polynomial of the form

1−(1−a−1X)(1−c1−1X)n(1)…(1−cr−1X)n(r) 1 - (1 - a^{-1}X)(1 - c_1^{-1}X)^{n(1)} \ldots (1 - c_r^{-1}X)^{n(r)}
where the cic_i are suitably chosen elements of HH such that v(ci)<v(a)v(c_i) < v(a) and the n(i)n(i) are sufficiently large integers >0> 0.)

(b) Let XX be a totally disconnected compact space; let the ring C(X;K)C(X; K) of continuous mappings from XX to KK be given the uniform convergence topology. Let BB be a subring of C(X;K)C(X; K) containing the constants and separating the points of XX; show that BB is dense in C(X;K)C(X; K) (Use (a) and General Topology, Chapter X, § 4, Exercise 21 (b).)
