Commutative Algebra, VI, 460

Let DD be a non-commutative field of characteristic ≠2\neq 2 and Z\mathbf{Z} its centre. Suppose that every commutative subfield KK of DD containing Z\mathbf{Z} is of degree ≤2\leq 2 over Z\mathbf{Z}.

(a) Show without using Lemma 1 that [D:Z]=4[D : \mathbf{Z}] = 4. (Let a∈D−Za \in D - \mathbf{Z} be such that a2∈Za^2 \in \mathbf{Z} and let σ(x)=axa−1\sigma(x) = axa^{-1} for all x∈Dx \in D; note that DD decomposes as a direct sum of two vector subspaces over Z\mathbf{Z}, D+D_+ and D−D_- such that σ(x)=x\sigma(x) = x on D+D_+, σ(x)=−x\sigma(x) = -x on D−D_-; note also that D+D_+ is a subfield of DD and D−D_- is a 1-dimensional vector space over D+D_+; finally, show that D+D_+ cannot be distinct from Z(a)\mathbf{Z}(a).) (b) Show that DD is a quaternion algebra over Z\mathbf{Z}. (Form a basis of DD over Z\mathbf{Z} with the aid of (a).)
