Commutative Algebra, VI, 471

(a) Let K be a commutative field and vv a valuation on K such that K is Henselian with vv (§8§ 8, Exercise 6). Suppose further that K and the residue field kk of vv are of characteristic 0. Show that there exists a subfield K0K_0 of the ring A\mathbf{A} of vv such that the canonical mapping A→k\mathbf{A} \to k, restricted to K0K_0, is an isomorphism of K0K_0 onto kk. (Let H be a subfield of A\mathbf{A} such that the image of H under the canonical mapping is an isomorphism onto a subfield E of kk; show that, if E≠kE \neq k, there exists α∉H\alpha \notin H in A\mathbf{A} such that the subfield H(α)H(\alpha) of K is contained in A\mathbf{A} and is canonically isomorphic to E(αˉ)E(\bar{\alpha}), where αˉ\bar{\alpha} is the class of α\alpha in kk; distinguish two cases according to whether αˉ\bar{\alpha} is algebraic or transcendental over E.)

(b) Suppose further that vv is a discrete valuation and that K is complete with respect to vv; deduce from (a) that K is isomorphic to the field of formal power series k((T))k((T)).
