(a) Suppose that K is a commutative field, vv a valuation of height 1 on K such that K is complete with respect to vv and A\mathbf{A} the ring of vv; suppose further that the residue field kk of vv is perfect and of characteristic p>0p > 0. For every element ξ∈k∗\xi \in k^* and every integer nn, let xnx_n be an element of the class ξp−n\xi^{p^{-n}} in A\mathbf{A}; show that the sequence (xnpn)(x_n^{p^n}) is a Cauchy sequence in A\mathbf{A} whose limit is independent of the choice of the xnx_n in the classes ξp−n\xi^{p^{-n}}. If this limit is denoted by ϕ(ξ)\phi(\xi), show that ϕ\phi is the unique isomorphism uu of the multiplicative group k∗k^* to the multiplicative group K∗K^* such that, for all ξ∈k∗\xi \in k^*, u(ξ)u(\xi) is an element of A\mathbf{A} belonging to the class ξ\xi.

(b) If K is also of characteristic pp, show that ϕ\phi, extended to kk by ϕ(0)=0\phi(0) = 0, is an isomorphism of the field kk onto a subfield of K. Deduce a new proof of Theorem 1 (iii) of no. 3.

(c) Suppose that kk is finite. Show that, if rr is prime top, the group (K∗)r(K^*)^r of rr-th powers of elements of K∗K^* is of finite index in K∗K^* (use Hensel's Lemma). Show that, if further vv is discrete and K of characteristic 0, the same result is valid without restriction on vv (observe that every element of 1+p2A1 + p^2\mathbf{A} is a pp-th power).
