Exercise 10, § 1

Commutative Algebra, VII, 547

Let AA be a Krull domain, KK its field of fractions, LL a field containing KK and (Bi)(B_i) a right directed family of Krull domains containing AA and contained in LL such that the field of fractions LαL_\alpha of BiB_i is a finite algebraic extension of KK and BiB_i is the integral closure of AA in LαL_\alpha. For every essential valuation vv of AA and all aa, let eα(v)e_\alpha(v) be the sum of the ramification indices of the valuations on BiB_i which extend vv. Show that for the union of the BiB_i to be a Krull domain, it is necessary and sufficient that for every essential valuation vv of AA, the set of eα(v)e_\alpha(v) be bounded.
