Exercise 12, § 1

Commutative Algebra, VII, 548

(a) Let AA be an integrally closed domain, f(X)=∑iaiXif(X) = \sum_i a_i X^i and g(X)=∑jbjXjg(X) = \sum_j b_j X^j be two polynomials in A[X]A[X]; show that, if c∈Ac \in A is such that all the coefficientsoff (X)g(X)(X)g(X) belong to AcAc, then all the products aibja_i b_j belong to AcAc (reduce it to the case where AA is a valuation ring).

(b) If AA is the ring defined in Exercise 1, give an example of two polynomials f,gf, g of degree 1 in A[X]A[X] and an element c∈Ac \in A for which the conclusion of (a) does not hold (take c=T4+T5c = T^4 + T^5).

(c) Under the hypotheses of (a), let a,b,ca, b, c be the ideals of AA generated respectively by the coefficientsoff, gg and fgfg: show that div⁡(c)=div⁡(a)+div⁡(b)\operatorname{div}(c) = \operatorname{div}(a) + \operatorname{div}(b). Give an example where c~≠a~b~\tilde{c} \neq \tilde{a} \tilde{b}. Show that, if cc is principal, c=abc = ab and aa and bb are invertible; if further AA is a local ring, aa and bb are principal.
