Exercise 23, § 1

Commutative Algebra, VII, 552

(a) Let AA be a pseudo-Bezoutiandomain (Exercise 21) and KK its field of fractions; for every polynomial f∈A[X]f \in A[X] a g.c.d. of the coefficients off (determined to within an invertible element of AA) is called a content off. Let f,gf, g be two polynomials of A[X]A[X]; show that for ff to divide gg in A[X]A[X], it is necessary and sufficient that ff divide gg in K[X]K[X] and that a content off divide a content of gg (use Exercise 12) (cf. Exercise 30 (c)).

(b) Deduce from (a) that, if AA is a pseudo-Bezoutian (resp. pseudo-principal) domain, then so is A[X]A[X]. Moreover, if (a_i) is a finite (resp. any) family of elements ≠0\neq 0 of AA and d a g.c.d. of this family in AA, d is also a g.c.d. of this family in A[X]A[X].

(c) Deduce from (b) that, if AA is pseudo-Bezoutian (resp. pseudo-principal) then A[Xλ]λ∈LA[X_\lambda]_{\lambda \in L} is pseudo-Bezoutian (resp. pseudo-principal) for every family (Xλ)λ∈L(X_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} of indeterminates.
