Exercise 24, § 1

Commutative Algebra, VII, 552

Let KK be an algebraically closed field and A=K[X,Y]A = K[X, Y] the polynomial ring in two indeterminates over KK, which is a Krull domain \* (and even a factorial domain). \* For every ordered pair (α,β)∈K2(\alpha, \beta) \in K^2 let wα,βw_{\alpha, \beta} be the discrete valuation on AA such that, for every polynomial f≠0,wα,β(f)f \neq 0, w_{\alpha, \beta}(f) is the least degree of the monomials ≠0inf⁡(X+α,Y+β)\neq 0 \inf (X + \alpha, Y + \beta). Show that AA is the intersection of the rings of the valuations wα,βw_{\alpha, \beta}, none of which is an essential valuation of AA.
