Exercise 26, § 1
Commutative Algebra, VII, 553
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be an integral domain and its field of fractions. A valuation on is called essential for if the ring of is a local ring at a prime ideal of (the intersection of and the ideal of ).
(a) Let be an essential valuation for of height 1 and let be the prime ideal consisting of those such that . Show that is of height 1. If does not belong to , then . If is a valuation on whose ring contains and whose ideal satisfies , show that is equivalent to .
(b) An integrally closed domain is said to be of finite character and real type if there exists a family of valuations on of height 1 satisfying properties (AK) and (AK). Show that under these conditions, if does not belong to and is a prime ideal of such that , there exists such that and that the prime ideal of such that is contained in . (Argue by reductio ad absurdum by considering the finite number of such that ; prove the existence of an such that and for all ; deduce that for every integer and show that this implies a contradiction.) Conclude from this that every essential valuation for of height 1 is equivalent to one of the (use (a)). Every finite intersection of subdomains of which are of finite character and real type is also a domain of finite character and real type.
(c) Suppose that the hypotheses of (b) are satisfied and moreover that all the are essential. Show that, for every prime ideal of of height 1, , is the ring of one of the valuations (use (b) taking ). For all , the principal ideal then admits a unique reduced primary decomposition (Chapter IV, § 2, Exercise 20), the prime ideals corresponding to this decomposition being the prime ideals of height 1 containing .
(d) Suppose that the hypotheses of (b) are satisfied. Let be a multiplicative subset of not containing 0 and the set of such that on . Show that the family satisfies properties (AK) and (AK) for the ring ; this family consists of essential valuations for if consists of essential valuations for .
(e) Generalize Proposition 9 of no. 5 to the case where the hypotheses of (c) are satisfied.
(f) Suppose the hypotheses of (b) are satisfied. Let be a finite extension of and the integral closure of in . Show that the valuations (no two of which are equivalent) on which extend the satisfy properties (AK) and (AK) for and the latter is therefore a domain of finite character and real type; if the are all essential for , so are their extensions for (argue as in no. 8, Proposition 12 and use also Chapter VI, § 8, no. 3, Remark).
(g) If is a domain of finite character and real type, so is ; if the conditionsof (c) are fulfilled, determine the essential valuations for (argue as in no. 9). Generalize Exercise 8 similarly.
