Exercise 31, § 1

Commutative Algebra, VII, 555

(a) Let AA be a regularly integrally closed domain (Exercise 30) and KK its field of fractions; for every polynomial P∈K[X]P \in K[X], let c(P)c(P) denote the divisor div⁡(a)\operatorname{div}(a), where aa is the fractional ideal of KK generated by the coefficients of PP. Let BB denote the subring of K(X)K(X) consisting of the rational functions P/QP/Q such that c(P)≥c(Q)c(P) \geq c(Q) (show that this condition depends only on the element P/QP/Q, using Exercise 30 (a) and 12 (c)). Then B∩K=AB \cap K = A.

(b) Show that BB is a Bezoutian domain (Exercise 20) (observe that, if P,QP, Q are two polynomials of A[X]A[X], P+XnQP + X^n Q divides PP and QQ in BB if mm is sufficiently large).

(c) Show that, if AA is a Krull domain, BB is a principal ideal domain (consider an increasing sequence of finitely generated fractional principal ideals of BB). Give an example where AA is completely integrally closed but BB is not a principal ideal domain (cf. Exercise 22).

(d) Deduce from (c) an example of a Noetherian domain BB for which there exists a subfield KK of its field of fractions such that B∩KB \cap K is not Noetherian.
