Exercise 20, § 3

Commutative Algebra, VII, 568

Let A be a factorial domain and f=∑k=0nakXkf = \sum_{k=0}^n a_k X^k a polynomial in A[X]A[X]: suppose that there exists an extremal element pp in A such that: (1) there exists an index k≤nk \leq n such that aia_i is not divisible by pp but aia_i is divisible by pp for i<ki < k; (2) aia_i is divisible by pp but not by p2p^2. Show that under these conditions one of the irreducible factors off in A[X]A[X] is of degree ≥k\geq k (argue in (A/pA)[X](A/pA)[X]). Consider the particular case where k=nk = n ("Eisenstein's irreducibility criterion").
