Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
For an associative law on a finite set there exist minimal subsets of the form (that is minimal elements of the set of subsets of of this form, ordered by inclusion). (a) If is minimal, then for all ; with the law induced by that on , is a left semi-group (Exercise 11) in which every left translation is bijective (cf. Exercise 13). (b) If and are minimal and distinct, then ; for all , the mapping of into is a bijective mapping of onto . Deduce that there exist an idempotent such that and an idempotent such that (take to be the idempotent such that ). Show that (consider ) and that every such that belongs to . (c) Show that the mapping of into is an isomorphism of onto ; deduce that and are isomorphic left semi-groups. (d) Let () be the distinct minimal subsets of the form : deduce from (b) that the idempotents of each left semi-group can be arranged in a sequence () so that for all . If is the union of the , show that (note that, for all , is a minimal subset of the form ); deduce that is the union of the for (show that ) and that . Prove finally that every minimal subset of the form is identical with one of the sets (note, using (a), that and deduce that ).
