Exercise 16, § 2

Algebra, I, 128

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let τ\tau be an associative law on a set EE and E∗E^* the set of cancellable elements of EE; suppose that E∗E^* is non-empty and that every cancellable element is a central element. Let F\mathscr{F} denote the set of subsets XX of EE with the following property: there exists y∈E∗y \in E^* such that δy(E)⊂X\delta_y(E) \subset X.

(a) Show that the intersection of two sets of F\mathscr{F} belong to F\mathscr{F}.

(b) Let Φ\Phi be the set of functions ff defined on a set of F\mathscr{F} taking their values in EE and such that, for X∈FX \in \mathscr{F}, f−1(X)f^{-1}(X) belongs to F\mathscr{F}. Let RR denote the relation between elements ff and gg of Φ\Phi: "there exists a set X∈FX \in \mathscr{F} such that the restrictions of ff and gg to XX are identical". Show that RR is an equivalence relation; let Ψ=Φ/R\Psi = \Phi / R be the quotient set of Φ\Phi under this relation.

(c) Let ff and gg be two elements of Φ\Phi, A∈FA \in \mathscr{F} and B∈FB \in \mathscr{F} the sets where ff and gg are respectively defined; there exists X⊂BX \subset B and belonging to F\mathscr{F} such that g(X)⊂Ag(X) \subset A; if gXg_X is the restriction of gg to XX, show that the mapping f∘gXf \circ g_X belongs to Φ\Phi and that its class (mod. RR) depends only on the classes of ff and gg (and not on XX); this class is called the composition of that of ff and that of gg; show that the law of composition thus defined on Ψ\Psi is associative and has an identity element.

(d) For all a∈Ea \in E, show that the left translation γa\gamma_a belongs to Φ\Phi; let ϕa\phi_a be its class (mod. RR). Show that the mapping x↦ϕxx \mapsto \phi_x is an isomorphism of EE onto a submonoid of Ψ\Psi and that, if x∈E∗x \in E^*, ϕx\phi_x is invertible in Ψ\Psi (consider the inverse mapping of γx\gamma_x, show that it belongs to Φ\Phi and that its class (mod. RR) is the inverse of ϕx\phi_x). Deduce a generalization of Theorem 1 of no. 4.
