Exercise 17, § 2

Algebra, I, 129

Let EE be a monoid and SS a stable subset of EE with the following properties:

(α) For all s∈Ss \in S and all a∈Ea \in E, there exist t∈St \in S and b∈Eb \in E such that sb=atsb = at.

(β) For all a,b∈Ea, b \in E and all s∈Ss \in S such that sa=sbsa = sb, there exist t∈St \in S such that at=btat = bt.

(a) In E×SE \times S let (a,s)∼(b,t)(a, s) \sim (b, t) denote the relation: "there exist s′s' and t′t' in SS such that tt′=ss′tt' = ss' and as′=bt′as' = bt'."

Show that ∼\sim is an equivalence relation. We write E‾=E×S/∼\overline{E} = E \times S / \sim, denote by as−1as^{-1} the equivalence class of (a,s)(a, s) (mod ∼\sim) and by ε:E→E‾\varepsilon : E \to \overline{E} the mapping a↦ae−1a \mapsto ae^{-1}.

(b) Show that there exists on E‾\overline{E} one and only one monoid structure such that ε\varepsilon is a unital homomorphism and such that, for all s∈Ss \in S, ε(s)\varepsilon(s) is invertible.

(c) Show that (E‾,ε)(\overline{E}, \varepsilon) has the universal property described in Theorem 1 (no. 4).

(d) Show that ε\varepsilon is injective if and only if the elements of SS are cancellable.
