Exercise 9, § 2

Algebra, I, 127

Under a multiplicative law on a set E let aa be a left cancellable element of E.

(a) If there exists an element uu such that au=aau = a, show that ux=xux = x for all x∈Ex \in E; in particular, if xu=xxu = x for all x∈Ex \in E, uu is identity element.

(b) If there exist u∈Eu \in E such that au=aau = a and b∈Eb \in E such that ab=uab = u, show that ba=uba = u (form abaaba); in particular, if there exists an identity element ee and an element bb such that ab=eab = e, bb is the inverse of aa.
