Let nn be an integer ≥1\geq 1 and let GG be a commutative group written additively, such that nx=0nx = 0 for all x∈Gx \in G. Let HH be a subgroup of GG and ff a homomorphism of HH into Z/nZ\mathbf{Z}/n\mathbf{Z}. (a) Let x∈Gx \in G and let qq be the order of the image of xx in G/HG/H; then qx∈Hqx \in H. Show that there exists α∈Z/nZ\alpha \in \mathbf{Z}/n\mathbf{Z} such that qα=f(x)q\alpha = f(x). Deduce the existence of an extension of ff to the subgroup of GG generated by HH and xx. (b) Show that ff extends to a homomorphism of GG into Z/nZ\mathbf{Z}/n\mathbf{Z} (use Zorn's Lemma).
