Exercise 19, § 6

Algebra, I, 152

Let GG be a finite commutative group. (a) Show that there exists an element x∈Gx \in G whose order nn is a multiple of the orders of the elements of GG. (Use the decomposition of GG as a product of pp-groups.) Show that the subgroup HH generated by such an element is a direct factor of GG (apply the above exercise to construct a homomorphism G→HG \to H whose restriction to HH is the identity). (b) Show that GG is a direct product of cyclic groups. (Argue by induction on Card(G)\mathrm{Card}(G) using (a).) (Cf. VII, § 4, no. 6.)
