Exercise 21, § 6

Algebra, I, 152

Let pp and qq be two prime numbers such that p>qp > q. (a) Show that every finite group GG of order pqpq is an extension of Z/qZ\mathbf{Z}/q\mathbf{Z} by Z/pZ\mathbf{Z}/p\mathbf{Z} (note that every Sylow pp-subgroup of GG is normal). If further p≢1(modq)p \not\equiv 1 \pmod{q}, show that GG is cyclic. (b) Deduce that the centre of a group cannot be of index 69. (c) Show that, if p≡1(modq)p \equiv 1 \pmod{q}, there exist a group of order pqpq whose centre is {e}\{e\}. (d) Show that every non-commutative group of order 6 is isomorphic to S3\mathfrak{S}_3.
