Exercise 24, § 6

Algebra, I, 153

Let GG be a finite group, HH a Sylow subgroup of GG and NN the normalizer of HH. Let X1,X2X_1, X_2 be two subsets of the centre of HH and s∈Gs \in G such that sX1s−1=X2sX_1s^{-1} = X_2. Show that there exists n∈Nn \in N such that nxn−1=sx1s−1nxn^{-1} = sx_1s^{-1} for all x∈X1x \in X_1 (apply the theorem on the conjugacy of Sylow subgroups to the centralizer of X1X_1). Deduce that two central elements of HH are conjugate in GG if and only if they are so in NN.
