Let ϕ:G→G′\phi : G \to G' be a surjective homomorphism of finite groups; let PP be a Sylow pp-subgroup of GG. (a) Let P1P_1 be a Sylow pp-subgroup of GG such that ϕ(P)=ϕ(P1)\phi(P) = \phi(P_1). Show that there exists an element xx of the kernel of ϕ\phi such that P1=xPx−1P_1 = xPx^{-1}. (b) Let NN (resp. N′N') be the normalizer in GG (resp. G′G') of PP (resp. ϕ(P)\phi(P)). Show that ϕ(N)=N′\phi(N) = N'. In particular, if the order of G′G' is not divisible by pp, then ϕ(P)={e}\phi(P) = \{e\} and ϕ(N)=G′\phi(N) = G'.
