Algebra, I, 157

(a) Let GG be a finite group, HH a normal subgroup of GG, pp a prime number not dividing the order of HH and PP a Sylow pp-subgroup of GG. Show that HP is the semi-direct product of PP by HH.

(b) We say that a finite group GG has property (ST) if there exists a numbering p1,…,psp_1, \ldots, p_s of distinct prime numbers dividing the order

n=p1a1⋯psas n = p_1^{a_1} \cdots p_s^{a_s}
of GG and Sylow pip_i-subgroups P1,…,PsP_1, \ldots, P_s of GG such that, for 1≤i≤s1 \leq i \leq s, the set Gi=P1P2…PiG_i = P_1 P_2 \ldots P_i is a normal subgroup of GG. Show that, if this is so, GiG_i does not depend on the choice of the PiP_i; it is the unique subgroup of GG of order p1a1⋯piaip_1^{a_1} \cdots p_i^{a_i}; further, GiG_i is the semi-direct product of PiP_i by Gi−1G_{i-1}.

(c) Show that a finite group GG has property (ST) if and only if there exists a Sylow subgroup PP of GG which is normal in GG and such that G/PG/P has property (ST).

(d) Show that every subgroup, every quotient group and every central extension of a group with property (ST) has property (ST).
